《Silent Night》(平安夜)這首歌曲誕生於1818年的一個奧地利小鎮的一間小教堂。平安夜在即，但教堂的管風琴壞了，神父Joseph找到國小校長兼管風琴師Franz把他兩年前寫的一首歌詞譜成吉他伴奏曲，在平安夜演唱，從此傳唱到世界各地。如今，《Silent Night》已經如同春晚上的《難忘今宵》，成爲平安夜永恆的代言曲目。
據說這首歌還促成了一戰中的一次停火。1914年的平安夜，英德兩軍的士兵在戰壕裏對壘,不知誰先唱出了《Silent Night》，歌聲穿透夜空，飄向敵方陣營。雖然語言不同，但音樂的魅力使敵營中的士兵不禁迴應起來，最後演變成爲一場聖誕歌曲戰地合唱音樂會。音樂有洗滌心靈的力量，這一刻，他們忘了雙方是交戰中你死我活的對手，迴歸人類和平友好的理性，互贈禮物，分享家事及對親人的思念。這一段和戰爭不和諧的插曲100多年後仍被人們傳爲佳話，難以忘懷。
2011年，《Silent Night》被聯合國教科文組織定爲非物質文化遺產。
